While I am an American, all of the guys I have dated in Japan seem to have the same understanding of "vanilla sex". In short it involves oral and manual sexual activity between men.

Anal intercourse wether active (insertive) or passive (receptive) is not included in vanilla sex. If you stick "your penis" in your partner's rectum it is active and not vanilla. If your partner sticks "his penis" in your rectum it is active and not vanilla.

I will leave the question of whether classifying the insertion of one's finger into another's rectum is active or vanilla, I would guess the former but I must defer to those with greater experience in such matters to render a judgement.

That being said, all can be very enjoyable and a lot of fun.
